Purchase of customer service royalties

In QuickBooks, you can record the purchase of customer service royalties when you are the recipient of such royalties from another party. To do this, you’ll want to set up an expense account and enter bills to track the royalties payable to you. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Set Up an Expense Account:
    • Go to the “Lists” menu and select “Chart of Accounts.”
    • Click “Account” at the bottom and choose “New” to create a new account.
    • Select “Expense” as the type of account and name it something like “Customer Service Royalties.”
  2. Enter Bills:
    • Go to the “Vendors” menu and select “Enter Bills.”
    • Choose the vendor who is paying you the customer service royalties.
    • In the “Expenses” tab, select the expense account you just created (“Customer Service Royalties”).
    • Enter the amount of the royalties and any other relevant information.
    • Save the bill.
  3. Record Payments:
    • When you receive payment for the royalties, record it.
    • Go to the “Vendors” menu and select “Pay Bills.”
    • Choose the bill related to the royalties and indicate the payment method.
    • Enter the payment amount and date.
    • Click “Pay Selected Bills.”
  4. Track Royalties Received:
    • You can track the royalties you’ve received in QuickBooks’ various reports. Go to the “Reports” menu and explore reports like the Expense by Vendor Summary or Profit and Loss statement to monitor your income from customer service royalties.
  5. 1099 Reporting (if applicable):
    • If you are the recipient of royalties and are subject to IRS Form 1099 reporting, ensure that the paying party has your Tax ID or Social Security Number on record. This will be needed for 1099 reporting.

Please consult with a certified accountant or tax professional to ensure that you are handling expenses and income in accordance with local laws and regulations, especially if you are dealing with royalties.
